June 1985 Tour of the 1837 Harger House on its Original Halsted Road Location : In the early 1980's, the Harger house, along with its several barns and outbuildings formed what was intended to be the equestrian hub for the adjacent subdivision where homeowners could stable and ride their horses. A renter/grounds person lived in this house. After a while, lack of maintenance brought the barns to a dangerous state, and caused the house to be an eyesore. The subdivision wanted to clear the land, and we in the Historical Commission and Historic District Commission were working feverishly to try to find a use for the buildings by a group that would do the needed maintenance and beautify the grounds. Finally, no acceptable situation developed and the barns and outbuildings were razed and the house dismantled and rebuilt on the north side of 12 Mile Road for a commercial use. The 1837 Harger House was unique in being the only cut stone Greek Revival house in Farmington Hills. A Harger family letter was located describing the building of the house followed by the planting of hickory trees. Each tree was toasted by the crowd with a round of hard cider drinks and roars of approval for then-president Andrew Jackson, known as "Old Hickory" who served as 7th president from 1829 to 1837.
